Bridge scour is one of the leading causes of bridge failure. The exposure andrnsubsequent undermining of the pier/abutment foundations through the erosive action of a floodrncan result in the structural failure of a bridge. Bridges that are subject to periods of flood/highrnflow require monitoring during those times in order to protect the traveling public. In this paper,rnan innovative live-bed scour monitoring device using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor wasrndeveloped and demonstrated in-situ during the Aere typhoon flood. In the present study, the insiturnFBG scour monitoring system is useful for real-time local scour depth measurements, and itrnhas proven to be valid for indicating the sedimentation depth during the storm flood period atrnthe Dadu Bridge. The field results indicate that the real-time monitoring system using thisrninstrumentation have the potential for practical applications.
