Employees’ organization-based self-esteem (OBSE) can be increased by giving employees tasks which fit their dispositions. Specifically, giving employees who prefer to handle multiple tasks simultaneously more task variety will increase their OBSE. This effect will be stronger for employees with high motivation to achieve. These propositions were tested using data collected from 260 employees in three Chinese organizations and their immediate supervisors. Contrary to expectations, giving more polychronic employees greater task variety did not always increase their OBSE, but giving less polychronic employees high task variety did increase their OBSE. However, offering more task variety to polychronic employees with high levels of achievement striving resulted in the highest levels of OBSE. Contrary to expectations, giving polychronic employees with low levels of achievement striving task variety actually lowered their OBSE.
