The BA Language Technology programwas recently introduced at the North-WestUniversity and is, to date, the only of itskind in South Africa. This paper gives anoverview of the program, which consistsof computational linguistic subjects aswell as subjects from languages, computerscience, mathematics, and statistics. Abrief discussion of the content of the programand specifically the computationallinguistics subjects, illustrates that the BALanguage Technology program is a vocationallydirected, future oriented teachingprogram, preparing students for both futuregraduate studies and a career in languagetechnology. By means of anexample, it is then illustrated how studentsand researchers alike benefit fromworking side by side on research and developmentprojects by using a problembased,project-organized approach to curriculumdesign and teaching.
