We report a novel manufacturing process to produce high-efficiency CdTe devices on low-costcommercial SnO SnO2/soda-lime /(SL) glass substrates. The modified SL-glass/SnO SnO2/ZTOano-CdS:O/CdTe /devicestructure developed at NREL has been used in this process. In this device structure, a nanostructured CdS windowlayer replaced the poly-CdS film in the conventional device structure, and a zinc-tin-oxide film was integratedinto a CdTe cell as a buffer layer located between the SnO SnO2 and the nano-CdS:O film. We have prepared a numberof CdTe cells on commercial SnO SnO2/SL /glass substrates with NREL-confirmed total-area efficiencies of more than14%. This new process provides an attractive alternative for producing CdTe modules with the potential of highthroughput and low cost.
