A new membrane filtration process has been developed by Norit and Heineken Technical Services. The base of the process is crossflow microfiltration of matured unseparated beer. This was tried in the past many times but has never been economically feasible due to short run times and inadequate cleaning of the membranes. The key to the feasibility now is a new patented regeneration method of the membranes. The membrane filtration process is fully automatic. Filter aid’s are no longer required and waste disposal is not an issue anymore. Also no health risk is involved anymore in relation to usage of kieselgur. This technology will alter in future filter room practices. Cost data and future cost c.q. process scenario will be shown.
