NAV CANADA, Canada’s national provider of civil air navigation services, is a non-sharecapital corporation with more than 5,000 employees coast to coast providing air traffic control,flight information, weather briefings, airport advisory services and electronic aids to navigation.Upon privatization in 1995, one of the company’s first priorities was the establishment of itsSafety Management Program and the implementation of its Safety Management System. Overthe past eight years the challenges of implementing safety management have been many but sotoo have the successes. This paper describes NAV CANADA’s Safety Management Program, itsSafety Management System and the challenges that the company faced while travelling thesometimes difficult but enlightening road of implementing a safety management system.
