This paper presents a new segmeutatiou technique for coloured images. It relies on building an irregular pyramid which presents only nodes associated to homogeneous colour regions. Segmentation is performed by rearranging the set of links among pyramid nodes. After segmentation process, several nodes placed at different pyramid levels may be regarded as roots of trees defined by its links to lower level nodes. These nodes define a partition at the base of the structure. Unlike other hierarchical methods based on relinking procedures, our algorithm does not operate in an iterative way and it, preserves region connectivity.
