This paper addresses the need and ability to measure the instantaneous heating/cooling rate, dT/dt. The heating/cooling rate is a quantity of substantial interest in transient heat transfer studies for diagnostics, health monitoring and thermal control purposes. A classical inverse heat conduction problem is reviewed to motivate and illustrate the usefulness of a heating/cooling rate sensor for enhancing diagnostic capabilities. In this context, the heating/cooling rate sensor would provide a second set of data capable of identifying the optimal prediction or regularization parameter. Today's state-of-the-art involves only ad hoc mathematical methods in which no standard exists. A brief description is presented indicating several passive and active approaches presently under consideration by the authors and their coworkers. For sake of illustration, an enhanced thermocouple analysis involving local error estimation is presented. Through a post-processing analysis, an accurate extraction of the local heating/cooling rate is developed. In health monitoring and thermal control situations, real-time sensors would require construction.
