The multiple W/O/W emulsion based formulations of Diclofenac sodium with improved stability were prepared by using interfacial complex film between macromolecules like Bovine serum albumin (BSA), Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) (each present in internal aqueous phase separately) with sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) in the middle oil phase (Sesame oil). The long term stability of formulations was assessed by microscopic analysis, percent phase separation and percent entrapment, which showed no significant changes in case of formulations containing macromolecules in the internal aqueous phase. In vivo studies indicated that drug in W/O/W emulsion formulation provided a protracted drug plasma profile for Diclofenac sodium.
