The Lead Zirconate Titanate/Glass (PZT/Glass) unimorph microcantilevers (2 – 4 mm length) were fabricated and their resonance spectra characterized. The mass change sensitivity of the microcantilevers was determined to be in the range of micrograms. Glass cantilever (190 micron thick) was used in conjunction with PZT (127 microns thick). An alternating electric field applied across the PZT was used to determine the resonance frequency, which is used to calculate the mass change at the cantilever tip. Binding of target antigen to the cantilever tip via monoclonal antibody (Mab) specific to the desired antigen alters the resonance frequency (measured using an impedance analyzer) and the result is quantitatively related to antigen concentration.
