Chemical processes are normally difficult to understand, specially when there are cycles present. Flowesheets are normally use to represent processes, however, they need to be interpreted by an experience engineer. In this paper, we describe a system called AGE (Automatic generation of explanations), capable of generating explanations in natural language of chemical processes. In AGE a process is constructed through a graphical interface by joining single units or components involved in the process. The individual components are associated with qualitative models from which a global model is constructed through compositional modelling. The qualitative simulation of the model along with functional information of each component are used to produce suitable explanations of the functionality of a wide range of chemical processes.
