The primary source of hydrogen today is from steam reforming of methane, however the conventional process is associated with high levels of GHG emissions. The provision of the thermal energy needed for this endothermic reaction can be provided by concentrated solar energy, thus producing a solar-enhanced fuel. The attraction of this is that if allows solar energy to be stored and transported in a more convenient form than that offered by electricity. In particular, while hydrogen storage technologies are developed, this hybrid solar/fossil fuel approach yields a C/H_2 ratio that allows the hydrogen to be stored as a liquid fuel, which may have advantages in cost and in overcoming infrastructural impediments.
