This work describes the effect of grain boundary engineering on micro-structure (DS) directional solidification Al-Ni and Al-Fe eutectics. Fundamentally, grain boundary engineering involves thermo-mechanical processing strain and re-crystallization. During the recrystallization step, special boundaries replace random boundaries in the boundary network. In the field of DS eutectics, Al-Ni and Al-Fe, where the appropriate conditions are obtained, grain boundary engineering appears to produce new materials where the grain size becomes refined on processing, the fraction of special boundaries increases and the deviations from exact sigma mis-orientations decrease,
