A Study on the FPGA Implementation of Edge Detection Algorithms

For a computer to have even a rudimentary form of vision, it must have the ability to recognize or locate objects. To accomplish this task, a computer must have the ability to process digital images. One way to process a digital image is to segment the image into regions. This paper focuses on using two different algorithms, known as the Sobel and Laplace algorithms, to perform the operation of segmenting an image into regions, more specifically edges. A comparison is done by implementing each algorithm in hardware, or more specifically in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and then evaluating the amount of time required for the clock period of each implementation. This paper briefly review the edge detection algorithms followed by the experimental implementations.
