The Proprietary Trench Box system (PTB) comprises modular strutted wall units capable of being readily installed to provide strong and quick support for trenches. This paper presents a finite element model simulating trench construction using the PTB, considering trench geometry, ground conditions, initial setting mode and practical factors. The adjacent ground movements and earth pressure on the box developed during trench construction are examined. The predictive capabilities and limitations were evaluated by comparison with field data from a series of insitu trials.
