Clean or Unclean - Consequences of Improper Penetrant Inspection Post-Cleaning

This paper will examine the most probable consequences resulting from improper or inadequate liquid penetrant inspection post-cleaning. Most companies spend a great deal of time, money and effort to adequately define how an inspection facility shall pre-clean parts for liquid penetrant inspection. Instructions for post-cleaning are only to remove all inspection residue prior to moving part to the next operation. We will examine the possible consequences in detail and discuss requirements for re-cleaning parts that have been inadequately prepared for shipment to the next fabrication or machining operation. In addition, there will be detailed discussion about the negative consequences of inadequate post-cleaning of parts inspected using the Liquid penetrant inspection method. Major areas of concern are: plating, paint, solid film lube and localized rework areas.
