The membrane and the ceramic media filtration systems failed to remove arsenic in the absenceof coagulant (ferric chloride) addition. Under optimized coagulant addition and mixingconditions, all the membrane and ceramic media filtration systems produced water with less than2 μg/L of arsenic. For the waters tested, the submerged outside-in membrane systems werefound to have a lower fouling tendency than the pressurized, inside-out membrane systems.Effect of influent water quality on the filter performance was characterized and presented in thispaper. The findings of this study will be useful for all the impacted water utilities that mayconsider using coagulation-assisted membrane or gravity, ceramic media filtration for arsenicremoval.
