Previously we described a coaxial slotarray antenna for cardiac ablation to treat cardiacarrhythmia. While it shows substantialimprovement in generating lesions over some of theexisting microwave antenna catheters, it is felt thatthe width to depth ratio of the lesion can beimproved further. Therefore, in this paper, wepropose two different types of microwave energydelivery methods in order to reduce the width todepth ratio of the lesions as compared to theconventional microwave energy delivery method.Studies using ovine heart muscles showed that whenusing the proposed microwave energy deliverymethod, the width is reduced (6.5mm versus 10.9mm,p<0.01) while the depth has been kept nearlyconstant (6.8mm versus 7.7mm p<0.01).Subsequently the width to depth ratio has beenreduced from 1.5 to close to 1.
