Low Cost Monitoring Systems Provide Financial Returns

Advances in personal computers and commercial software have made low costmonitoring systems possible. Using the same hardware and software, systems can bemodified for each individual plant application. These personalized systems have lessmonitoring capabilities than vendor supplied systems, but cost less and provideeconomic benefits such as lower plant operating costs and increased revenue. IdahoPower Company has installed two examples of low-cost, personalized systems; anadvanced warning system at Swan Falls powerplant, and capacity optimization atBrownlee powerplant. System costs, implementation strategy, and financial benefitsalong with the technical aspects of each example are discussed.
