The HDR test facility in Karlstein, Germany was a decommissioned research reactor whose containment building and most of its components were preserved for use as a largescale test facility for examining a wide variety of nuclear safety issues. One of hte testing programs in the HDR measured the effects of large fires on the containment building. This testing program used a number of different fuel types and fire powers with the fires occurring at a variety of locations in the containment building. One subset of tests, the T52 test series, in this program involved oil fires in a compartment located beneath the operating deck of the HDR facility. The T52 test series was designed to simulate the effects of a postulated cable fire occurring above the reactor pressure vessel, but below the operating deck. The test series in volved four fires ranging in maximum fire power from 2 to 4 MW. The tests were instrumented with a 3-dimensional array of temperature and velocity sensors along with sensors to analyze the combustion product gasses produced by the fire.
