The selection of the width of cut during optimization in multi-pass face milling is an important activity, along with the selection of the speed and feed. A geeral approach for the optimal design of machining parameters for multi-pass face milling operations is presented. The optimization is carried out in two stages. In the first stage, optimization of speed and feed for individual passes is achieved considering various fixed values of width of cut using optimization strategies for single-pass milling operations. In the second stage, the optimum number of machining passes and the width of cut for each pass is obtained by enumerative method.
