Present and future technical and policy measures for improving air pollution caused by motor vehicles in major cities in Asia

In Asia, there are a number of so-called "megacities," which have large populations ranging from several to more than 10 million. They have been suffering from serious air pollution problems, mainly due to emissions from motor vehicles. The pollution is inevitably exacerbated by the growth of vehicle mobility and the associated traffic congestion. The pollutants include suspended particulate matters (SPM's), nitrogen dioxide (NO_2), ozone (O_3), carbon monoxide (CO) and lead (Pb). Moreover, massive amounts of fossil fuel consumed by various measns of transportation, especially automobiles, result in accelerated global warming.
