The DISTINCT Project: Moving From European Research to Large ScaleImplementation and Standardisation

This paper provides a commentary on the scope and achievements of the DISTINCT Project,which was funded under the EU’s 4th Framework Research Programme. This projectdeveloped and trialled a range of citizen accessible services accessed through a smart card.The project also established a European Standard for an open ID for citizen smart cards,which has been published by CEN-ISSS in July 2000. The results of the project are nowbeing adopted in a number of National and European implementations of smart cards.
