ITS APPLICATIONS TO BE INTRODUCED ONTHE NEW TOMEI-MEISHIN EXPRESSWAY

Great expectations are being placed on intelligent transport system (ITS) as an effectivesolution to various traffic-related problems, such as traffic accidents, traffic congestion,aggravation of the environment surrounding expressways, deterioration of the globalenvironment, and growing energy consumption. The Japanese government plans to make theNew Tomei-Meishin Expressway (a section between Toyota, Aichi Prefecture and Yokkaichi,Mie Prefecture) a model case of the introduction of ITS. The section will be open to traffic inthe year 2003. The Japan Expressway Public Corporation is now constructing the newexpressway. It has conducted studies on the necessary applications of the intelligent transportsystem, after studying characteristics of the new expressway, traffic accidents, drivers’ needsfor traffic information, and other factors. This is a report on the outline of the studies and thetypes of applications needed for New Tomei-Meishin Expressway system.
