Two single crystal nickel-based superalloys, SCA and SCB, were developed in the framework of an European co-operative research programme for turbine blade applications in industrial land-based and marine gas turbine engines. These alloys exhibit optimum balances between the mechanical properties and the hot corrosion resistance in severe environments and they are suited for casting of large single crystal components. Their creep strength potential will offer significant working temperature advantages over currently used conventionally cast or directionally solidified superalloys.
