Since they were first introduced in the early 1990s, lithium ion batteries have enjoyed unprecedented growth and success in the consumer market place. Combining excellent performance with affordability, they have become the product of choice for portable computers and cellular phones. Building on the same attributes and adding high power capabilities, the lithium ion technology is becoming the solution of the future for vehicle applications. Today, both electric and hybrid electric prototype vehicles are running with lithium ion technology. A similar trend can be expected in other fields of applications, especially for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV).
