In Europe the Council Directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to noise at work (86/188/EEC) [1] was issued in May 1986. This Directive declared that member states should bring into force regulations and provisions to comply with it by 1 January 1990. In the United Kingdom this deadline was complied with and The Noise at Work Regulations 1989 (NAW Reg's) [2] came into force on the 1st January 1990.
