Although the technologies for ethylene production are very mature, there has been sustained great interests in developing new processes, both conventional and non-conventional, to achieve better olefin yields and lower capital and operation costs as well as to utilize alternative low cost feedstocks. Non-conventional processes include those run on alternative feeds (methane-based, ethanol, crude oil, and coal-based) and those use conventional feeds through the employment of catalysts and/or oxygen with different reactor types, contact means, and heat-supply methods. This paper reviews recent development sin non-conventional ethylene technologies and evaluates commercial technologies and processes under R&D.
