While analyzers and sample conditioning have become much more reliable the sample collection and transport methods continue to be the most troublesome and overlooked portion of the analyzer system. It is generally accepted that if an analyzer is not providing the expected result there is a 60 to 80% chance that the cause is due to sample collection and transport problems.This paper focuses on the transport of analyzer samples. It highlights problem areas and discusses possible causes and solutions. Process and emissions analyzers are considered. The components discussed include; sample tap and pre-conditioning requirements, transition from tap to a manufactured tubing bundle, tubing bundle considerations ranging from tube selection to heating and temperature control methods, and finally the transition to the sample conditioning cabinet.The focus is on maintaining the sample consistently so that what is delivered to the analyzer is truly representative of the process. Emphasis is given to constructability and practical solutions.
