Development of a virtual reality system for training in nuclear security

Since inception, the Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN), under the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), has been involved in the strengthening of ISCN. ISCN provides training courses for capacity-building through human resource development. They began developing a virtual reality (VR) system specifically for training in nuclear security in 2011, and introduced it in regular training courses from April 2012. The course is specifically for trainees who have had few experiences in nuclear security, allowing them to see the nuclear physical-protection (PP) system of a nuclear power station in a virtual space and to learn how it works. In October 2012, ISCN provided the course in the Regional Training Course on the PP of nuclear material and facilities. Another training course is under development that will be for operators in central alarm stations, where trainees can brush up their skills through simulation exercises against enforced entry.
