In times of growing global competitiveness the safety and availability of plants and systems are the key factors influencing product quality and operating costs. The development of a well balanced and practicable strategy consisting of preventive and corrective maintenance is essential. The simulation of all influencing factors in one mathematical model requires an integral approach including technology, organization, human activity and operational experience. Thus it is possible to quantitatively assess the influence of main tenance measures on availability, safety and on-going costs. This allows the development of maintenance scheme that makes it possible to simultaneous optimize plant safety and availability.
