A Modern Design Methodology for Synchronous Generators

Traditional machine design strategies, in general, rely on the use of a lumped parameter approach to determine the critical design parameters. Modem numerical field analysis methods, for example the finite element method, can then be applied to 'fine tune' the design and to calculate the machine parameters and characteristics. This procedure is laborious, particularly for machine designers who are unaccustomed to modem field solution methods, since the geometric information about stator and rotor laminations has first to be 'processed'. This presentation describes a design methodology developed at Newage International (NT) Ltd., the world's largest manufacturer of synchronous generators, in which a modem spreadsheet software is utilized at the initial design stage. This is coupled to an in-house finite element interface so that complex finite element procedures, for example mesh generation and application of sources and boundary conditions, are 'transparent' to the designer. The simplification of these procedures allows a rapid turnaround of design parameters, and enable the designer to focus on other aspects of the design.
