A comprehensive resilience management program goes beyond good structural engineering design. It includes: Risk Avoidance, Risk Transfer and Risk Adaptation. This paper describes three practical cases studies which employed a range of engineering based strategies to improve resilience of a building owner's physical assets using all three methods. These include: two state court facilities where the structural engineer employed Performance Based Engineering to determine the life cycle return on investment of multiple structural design options; a California healthcare provider that used Quantitative Risk Engineering to quantify the property and business interruption risks and optimize its earthquake insurance program; and a university that has established a robust emergency response and recovery program that includes training of hundreds of staff on basic building damage assessment, to speed recovery following a major seismic event.
