In this study, 38/ 34kV Highway N Substation, St. Charles County, Missouri was analyzed with a finite element model (FEM) for its vulnerability during earthquake excitations. Every component of the substation was modeled with due considerations of mass density, stiffness and geometries. Based on the FEM, modal analysis was conducted to identify the natural frequencies of structures along with their corresponding mass participation factors. In response spectrum analysis, the dynamic responses of main components such as 'rigid' buses and switches were evaluated. In time-history analysis, both site-specific synthetic ground motion and spectrum compatible ground motion were considered. The numerical results under both ground motions were compared and the magnitude and location of the maximum moments in each case were identified.
