With continuing concern about air quality, the focus on reducing emissions harmful to the environment is not only accelerating rapidly, it is global in scope. It requires organizations large and small to be proactive, anticipating the needs of tomorrow and initiating research programs to solve them. A good example of this proactive approach is present in the marine transport and shipping industry where emission control regulation of NO_x by worldwide groups such as the IMO (International Marine Organization) is considered a significant challenge. Although marine diesel engine builders have already shown the ability to reduce NO_x emissions by 30-50% with engine design and operational modifications, further reductions in NO_x emissions will eventually be required.This poster presentation provides the details of a proactive, multi-year research program that has succeeded in reducing NO_x emissions from a full-scale marine crosshead diesel engine by more than 90%. It includes a brief description of the engine installation, the emission control technology, and the overall system operating parameters. This presentation also reviews the numerous obstacles and technical challenges encountered and the solutions thereof, and highlights the excellent results obtained.
