TECHNOLOGY, GLOBALIZATION AND THE PETROLEUM EXPORTING COUNTRIES

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have discussed the two main themes of this conference-technology and globalization-as they affect the oil industry in particular the oil-exporting countries. Let me emphasize that OPEC views upstream and downstream technological advances, as well as globalization, as positive developments. Clearly, the rapid development of technology and the trend towards globalization of the oil industry offer fantastic opportunities for all of us. But equally clearly, there are many issues that we must confront if we are to turn these forces to our mutual advantage and to ensure that the benefits are evenly distributed in the years ahead.
