The gamma parameter appears to effectively predict the erosion rate of hydrocarbon polymers in LEO and LEO-like environments. Its validity reflects strongly on the fundamental assumption that intramolecular oxygen plays a pivotal role in the reaction mechanism. Based on the simple fact that there is a polymer (Delrin®) which has a gamma parameter of infinity, more work is required to refine the relationship for polymers with high gamma values (>5). For example, the effect of assuming that other products, such as CO_2 instead of CO, are formed is currently being examined.
