For the development of the fans used in the engine cooling systems, the R&D department of Valeo Engine Cooling has chosen an approach that combines experimental and numerical studies. The goal of such studies is to improve the efficiency of the fan while reducing its axial packaging and the emitted sound level.A collaboration between Valeo Engine Cooling and The French and German Research Institute of Saint-Louis has been conducted on the visualization of inlet and outlet fan flow by Particle Image Velocimetry. Comparisons of the measurements with CFD results have been achieved.
