Today, in ever shorter development cycles, automobile manufacturers and suppliers are bringing technically and qualitatively high-grade products for volume production. Tight timeframes and constrained budgets make an efficient product development process essential. Support during all phases of this by state-of-the-art simulation tools is needed to optimize components and systems, and to minimize costly and time-consuming experimental prototype testing.Of special importance is the interlinkage of the simulation tools to maximize their effectiveness, and their direct integration into each of the phases of product development. Taking as an example the development of an automotive air-conditioning system, the simulation techniques perfected at Behr GmbH & Co. for the HVAC-system, components and the passenger compartment as well as their logical interconnections with each other and their incorporation into the development process are presented. Specific examples illustrate the potential for achieving savings in time and costs by fully integrated predictive engineering.
