This paper discusses the problem of low evaporation rates of defrosted water in household vapour-compression-cycle based refrigerators. To improve evaporation rates, the paper proposes five different arrangements that are analysed and compared with each other. A transient heat and mass transfer model that was developed earlier, is used to quantify the effect of various parameters on water evaporation such as air velocity and other heat sources (eg. auxiliary condenser and compressor heat). An experiment is also performed to find the baseline parameters and validate the simulation model. It has been found that the evaporation of water can be increased by raising the water temperature and having slight air movement over the water surface. For the best result of the latter, air velocity should be maintained around 0.9m/s, beyond which its effect is not relatively significant.
