16-day-old gestation fetal mouse long bones were cultured "in-vitro" in one of 5 culture environments for 4 days. After culture, the fetal mouse long bones were fixed and mounted histologically. Image analysis was used to quantify the mineralization of the fetal mouse long bones. The fetal mouse long bones successfully mineralized after 4 days of culture where increasing concentration of Na- beta -glycerophosphate decreased the long bones' rate of mineralization. The long bones cultured on 45S5 substrata showed a greatly enhanced the rate of mineralization. Mineralization of the long bones grown in 45S5 extracts was also enhanced but the rate of mineralization was not as large as with the substrates.
