Waste tires can be a significant threat to public health and the environment. Approximately 30 million passenger vehicle and off road vehicle tires are discarded, incinerated, crumped, or shipped out of state for reose or disposal each year. The Oxford Tire Piles in Westley, California is considered to be the largest tire pile in the state. Early estimates of the tire piles have ranged up to 40 million tires. Recent restiates by Califormia Integrated Waste Mangement Borard (CIWMB) staff placed the size of the tire ples at approximately 11 million tires as of May 1, 1997. The amount of tires remaining on site is estimated to be approximately 6 million.
