Needs and Advancements in Power Engineering Education - Academic Perspective

Electric power and energy industry in the world is going through unprecedented changes during the current decade in the wake of deregulation. The utility industry is making rapid adjustments to restructuring itself to meet the impending competition among the involved entities. As a result the character of the entire industry is going through fundamental changes in terms of mergers, right sizing and veen in some cases extinction. In these times of rapid changes, how do universities offering power programs respond to the uncertain supply/demand scenario? In the past four decades these power programs faced considerable difficulties in sustaining both the quality and the throughput of graduates due to the regulatory nature of the industry. The future, however, is going to be challenging and it offers tremendous potential to restructure the power programs. Both the university administrators and faculty members involved in shaping the future of the programs have to be creative in meeting this impending challenge.
