Although fuel cells have significant potential advantages in efficiency,emissions,reliability,and modularity,the technology has thus far not achieved a low enough cost for extensive use in the market place.GRI is supporting basic research to develop very low-cost,solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).these SOFCs are planar,operate with high efficiency qat temperatures of 650-800 deg C (as compared to the 1000 deg C operating temperature of other SOFCs),have a design in which thin electrolyte film is suported on a thicker electrode,and employ inexpensive metallic interconnects.This paper describes: (1) analysis leading to the conclusion that these fuel cells have potetial for a total system capital cost of
