Theoretical analysis of block carrying capacity under moving autoblock system

Moving Autoblock System (MAS) is a new train control system. It has many advantages over Fixed Autoblock System (FAS). As to the practical application of MAS, however, a lot of theoretical analyses need to be done, of which the capacity evaluation is of great importance. This paper focuses on the analysis of theoretical and practical headway models of train following operation in blocks under MAS condition. Based on the analyses, it is pointed out that MAS and FAS are quite differen in terms of headway of train following operation in blocks as well as block carrying capacity. The most significant difference is that, under MAS condition, headway of train following operation in blocks is neither fixed, nor in linear relation to train speed. According to the numerical results based on the typical parameters of rolling stocks of Chinese railway, the speed corresponding to the maximal capacity is around 70-80 km/h. It is also pointed out that a buffer coefficient should be introduced into the theoretical headway models to guarantee train operation performance.
