The response to the M/T Julie N oil spill provided a case study example of the application of classic, nearshore mechanical recovery strategies. Thechniques employed included containment booming, protective booming, shoreline entrapment, single vessel recovery and passive collection. The use of multiple techniques was necessary because of the different environments and diversity of shoreline affected by the spill. The use of the multiple strategies was a factor in the success of the response. The experimence of the. Julie N will benefit spill managers by documenting the recovery techniques used and illustrating how the location of spilled oil helps dictate the selection of the proper recovery technique, or combination of techniques.
