The principles of radiological protection optimization were laid down by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) a long time ago and were reaffirmed in 1990 The requirements to optimize radiological protection has also beenincluded in the 1996 issue of the European Union basic standards. Under Article 28 of the German Radiological Protection Ordinance such optimization is required too, however slightly different from the ICRP wording. Based on the provisions of law andother directives and regulations, optimization of protection has become an important part of radiological safety in nuclear power plants, which is reflected in the radiation protection organization and the sequence of operations. Lately, also the elementof quantitative optimization has been considered more intensely in German nuclear power plants to reach a better understanding and general acceptance when taking relevant decisions on dose-reducing radiation protection measures.
