The behaviour of pyramid-shaped foundations similar to those adopted for overhead power transmission liens is investigated. particular attention is given to the response to uplift, the most critical situation for terminal tower foundation.s Models with 75mm and 50mm square bases were embeded in sand or crushed limestone and accelerated to simulate the behaviour of prototypes with 4m square bases. Failure mechanism studies are also reported. Theoretical predictions from the design approaches of Ovesen(1981). Rowe & Davis(1982) and Vermeer & Sutjiadi(1985) give reasonable agreement with breakout factors derived from the centrifuge tests.
