If physical-chemical bonding exists at bone-implant interfaces it is important to characterize its strength since the bond may fail if the interfacial stresses and strains become too large. Weinans et al. presented a FE simulation of debonding ata bone-implant interface in the context of subsequent relative motion at the interface. In the present paper we use a similar FE formulation to that of Weinans et al., except that our model uses some of the available experimental data on interfacial shear and tensile strengths of bone-titanium osseointegrated interfaces as input to the interfacial failure criterion.
