If physical-chemical bonding exists at bone-implant interfaces, it is important to characterize its strength, since the bond may fail if the interfacial stresses and strains become too large. Weinans et al. presented a FE simulation of debondign at a bone-implant interface in the context of subsequent relative motion at the interface. In the present paper, we use a similar FE formulation to that of Weinans et al., except that our model uses some of the available exerimental data on interfacial shear and tensile strengths of bone-titanium osseointegrated interfaces as input to the interfacial failure criterion.
